What is textile sublimation?
1. What is Textile sublimation?
First of all, we must know what it means to sublimate.
According to the RAE: 1. To magnify, exalt, extol, or set in height. 2. Move directly from the solid state to the steam state.
In this second section is where we are going to focus:
Textile sublimation is a process that consists of three fundamental physical parts:
A) A paper printed with the image to be transferred to the garment, usually a specialized company makes the sheets of paper although lately have proliferated much the printers for individuals that print few units.
B) A garment (usually a shirt, can be polyester or normal, but can also be any textile garment: suede, polyester mobile cover, or any sublimable article).
C) A machine uses a transfer iron that transfers the image on the paper directly to the garment applying 3 things:
1. Temperature of 200 degrees, although sometimes can vary 20 up or down.
2. Pressure on the garment-paper-iron (in this order). That is to say: there is a base where the garment is put, then the paper is placed with the printed part touching the garment and then lower the iron transfer that is to 200 degrees.
3. Time: The time always depends on the textile garment to sublimate. Preliminary tests should always be done to know the optimal state of sublimation.
Summarizing: Applying heat and pressure on a garment, we have placed a printed paper on it, for a few seconds and applying a certain pressure the image of the paper will be transferred to the garment.
2. How is a garment sublimated?
The process of textile sublimation consists of 5 steps:
A) Prepare the iron: It adjusts the temperature, time and pressure to be exerted by the transfer iron to transfer the image to the textile garment. This should be readjusted to the first garments (2 or 3 test) to know the optimal fit. The experience will guide you to know the seconds, the temperature and the pressure.
B) Prepares the textile garment: The textile garment is placed on the iron by centering it so that the printed paper fits correctly on the garment and in the place where we want the printed paper image to go.
C) Put printed paper on the garment. Right in the place where you want the image to go in the garment you must place the printed paper.
D) Lower the plate to apply heat: You must lower the plate by closing it and wait for the set time to elapse. When the heat and pressure are applied, the sublimation effect will occur, that is, the ink of the paper will go from solid to gaseous state by being placed inseparably on the surface of the garment.
E) Remove the textile garment from the iron transfer: Once the set time has elapsed you must remove the sublimated garment and the paper, which will be glued to the garment, of the transfer iron, but carefully since the garment and paper will be Very hot and you could burn, we recommend that you use a thermal glove. Then remove the paper from the garment by peeling it off as if it were an adhesive and you will see how the sublimated image has remained on the garment.
3. How to set the time, temperature and pressure in the tranfer iron?
Temperature: Usually 200 degrees are used, although your own experience will tell you whether to go down or up for certain items or possible items to be sublimated.
Pressure: The more pressure the more stuck the image will remain, the more heat the garment will suffer, the medium or high pressure recommended for optimum textile sublimation. It will also tell you the experience.
Time: Always depend on the garment to sublimate and size. Some parameters are:
Textile Garment 45
Glasses Suede 30
Mouse pad 30
Handbags 55
Mobile phone case 30
